The South Carolina Festival of Flowers has made Greenwood proud again! The Festival competed this year against other major festivals and events from around the world in a variety of categories.
The SC Festival of Flowers received two (2) top honors at the International Festivals & Events Association’s (IFEA) Convention and Expo in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, held last month.
Greenwood’s dual summer festivals accounted for almost $7 million in economic development this year, bringing huge windfalls to local restaurants and lodgers, organizers said on Monday.
Between the Greenwood SC Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Festival of Flowers and Uptown’s Festival of Discovery, nearly 150,000 visitors poured into the region from more than a dozen states.
Greenwood Public Works employees from the horticulture department have started moving the seasonal topiaries from Uptown back to the greenhouse on Phoenix Street, where they will be trimmed, cleaned, maintained and stored until they go back on display before next year’s S.C. Festival of Flowers. City employees, master gardeners and volunteers take part in the care of the topiaries year-round.
Back by popular demand, the 246 Army Band out of Columbia, SC closed out the SC Festival of Flowers this past Tuesday and foster patriotic feelings as we head into July 4th festivities. Their “Musical Salute to America,” featured selections from big band, jazz, and ceremonial classics. The band brought hundreds of people to the Greenwood County Veterans Center Museum, packing the place till there was standing room only. During their branches’ hymn, veterans were asked to stand and they were honored by the crowd’s thunderous applause.
Despite a majority of opening weekend events for the 52nd annual festival being moved inside to Piedmont Technical College’s Medford Event Center on Saturday, officials weren’t about to call off one of its most popular attractions — and they were rewarded, with 500 people purchasing tickets and nearly that many defying a torrential downpour to sip on a shandy, revel in a rose or partake in a pinot grigio.
Get ready to “Feel the Fun” during the 52nd South Carolina Festival of Flowers main weekend in Greenwood, Friday through June 9.
The SC Festival of Flowers is bringing back the Flower of the Year Art Competition as a part of its 53rd annual SC Festival of Flowers celebration in Greenwood, SC. Festival Coordinator Austin Walker commented that it was time to bring back this wonderful tradition of showcasing talented artists and beautiful works of art. “As a middle schooler I remember my art mentor, Dot Moore, winning the art competition.
